The short answer: June and September. The sea is warm, everything is open, and the village is not yet — or no longer — overwhelmed. For diving, the season runs from June to October, with the warmest water in August and September.
The climate is semi-arid Mediterranean, among the driest and sunniest in Europe: mild winters, hot summers, and only about 300 mm of rain a year, most of it in a few autumn downpours.
Month by month
Figures are typical averages and vary from year to year.
| Month | Air (day) | Sea | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan–Feb | 16–17 °C | 14–15 °C | Quiet, sunny, cool. Clear water for hardy divers; many businesses on reduced hours. |
| Mar–Apr | 18–21 °C | 15–16 °C | Spring flowers in Calblanque, best walking. Easter is busy. |
| May | 23–24 °C | 18–19 °C | Warm days, cool sea. Tours and boats start up. |
| June | 27–28 °C | 21–23 °C | Excellent: long days, warm enough to swim, moderate crowds. |
| July | 30 °C | 24–25 °C | Hot and busy. Book diving and restaurants ahead. |
| August | 30–31 °C | 26–27 °C | Peak season: warmest sea, full village, traffic and parking pressure. |
| September | 28 °C | 25–26 °C | Perhaps the best month: warm sea, fewer people. Occasional storms. |
| October | 24 °C | 22–23 °C | Still swimmable, good diving. Highest risk of heavy rain. |
| Nov–Dec | 17–20 °C | 16–19 °C | Mild and peaceful. Short days; limited services on La Manga. |
The winds: levante and lebeche
Wind matters more here than temperature. Two winds have names you will hear every day:
- Levante — from the east. Humid, sometimes strong for days, it raises swell on the Mediterranean side, closes exposed dive sites and brings waves to Playa de Levante. The south-facing coves and the Mar Menor stay calmer.
- Lebeche — from the south-west. Warm and dry, sometimes hazy with dust. It ruffles the south-side coves and flattens the sea to the north and east.
Because Cabo de Palos has coast facing three ways, plus the lagoon, there is almost always somewhere sheltered. Ask at your dive centre or hotel which side is good today.
Best time for diving
You can dive all year. From June to October the surface water is 21–27 °C, days are long and conditions are most reliable, though a summer thermocline means it is much colder at depth. September and October are many regulars’ favourite: warm water down deeper, fewer boats, lots of fish. In late spring, cooler water sometimes brings ocean sunfish. Winter offers superb visibility and empty sites, in 14–15 °C water, with more days lost to wind. In July and August the daily quotas mean you must book well ahead.
Best time for beaches and snorkelling
Mid-June to late September for comfortable swimming without a wetsuit. The Mar Menor warms up weeks earlier and stays warm later than the open sea, which extends the season for children.
Best time for walking and sightseeing
March to May and October to November. Calblanque is at its greenest in spring; Cartagena and Murcia are far more pleasant below 30 °C. Cartagena’s Holy Week and its Carthaginians and Romans festival in the second half of September are worth planning around, as is La Unión’s flamenco festival in August.
Crowds and prices
August is a different place from the rest of the year: the population multiplies, La Manga’s single road jams, and accommodation prices peak. The first half of July and the first weeks of September are noticeably easier. From November to March you may have the lighthouse to yourself, but check that the hotels and restaurants you want are open.
